As I am in the middle of my yoga therapist training, it might be helfpful to explore the difference between what a yoga teacher does and what a yoga therapist does.
As I am in the middle of my yoga therapist training, it might be helpful to explore the difference between what a yoga teacher does and what a yoga therapist does.
Yoga teachers serve as facilitators, guiding students through the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of yoga practice. Their primary focus lies inteaching various yoga techniques, including asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing exercises), and meditation, often within a group setting. Throughstructured classes, they aim to cultivate strength, flexibility, balance, andinner peace among their students. Yoga teachers typically have their 200- houraccreditation (minimal number and program for certification) and some may havestudied further with an advanced 300- hour credential (500 hours total).
In contrast, yoga therapists employ yoga as a therapeutic tool to addressspecific health concerns and promote overall well-being. Yoga therapy classesare tailored to the individual whether in a small group setting or one-on-one.Yoga therapy also draws from all the tools of yoga-not just the physicalpractices of asana with personalized assessment and goal setting in the contextof a therapeutic relationship. To be accredited, yoga therapists have to have acertification from the International Association of Yoga Therapists from an approved 800- hour yoga program.
Yes, I am in the middle of my 800-hour certification. It is such an amazing journey! I will be offering one-on-one sessions in the
fall of 2024 to add to my group yoga therapy classes. Stay tuned….With gratitude, Michelle
