As the winter solstice graces us with its presence marking the shortest day and the longest night of the year, it is an opportunity for reflection, rest and renewal. The winter solstice holds a special place in yoga and I welcome the opportunity to honor the natural cycles of light and dark, activity and rest and the chance to pause.
The fall equinox can leave us feeling a little off balanced with the wind blowing us over and the earth energy trying to ground us. Winter solstice invites us to see the balance in nature and spend some time on pause. In reality, the earth has titled to its furthest point from the sun making the nights longer (or darker)and we spend the next few months observing the gradual return of light. It’s a balacing act, like the ancient yogic philosophy of yin and yang–the dualities that coexist within us and around us.
One of the key themes of the Winter Equinox is stillness. Cultivating a sense of inner calm. Here are a few ideas to celebrate the meaning of the Winter Solstice and remind us that even in the darkest times, light is on the horizon.

- Light a candle. Yes, that simple. Light a candle to signify the light coming back. It also helps draw your attention inwards. Pause.
2. Write out the thoughts you don’t want to keep. Write them down and then gently (and safely) light them and let them burn away. I like to do this in the bathtub.
3. Manifest what you would like when spring arrives by writing out what dreams are stirring inside of you, what feels relevant, what you would like to start or anything that reflects the new beginning when spring arrives. Write your thoughts out on plant paper and plant your thoughts so they bloom in springtime.
By honoring this sacred pause and reflection, we can emerge more centered. May the winter solstice allow you to connect deeper to yourself and the world around you.
