Each year, the summer solstice marks the longest day and the peak of the sun’s energy in the Northern Hemisphere. It’s a moment of fiery brightness, outward expansion, and celebration of life in full bloom. In yoga, this solar turning point is not just celestial—it is spiritual. The solstice invites us to align our personal rhythms with the rhythms of nature.
How can yoga be incorporated to honour and celebrate the solstice? I am so glad you asked. Here are some suggestions:
–Write a reflection on your personal light and how you share it with the world. Or consider your purpose (dharma) and reflect on how you are rooting this into your life.
–Practice sun salutations focusing on the intention of the movement rather than the number of salutations made during the day.
–Meditate at sunrise or sunset
–Hold a solstice gathering. Invite friends to the beach, your backyard, etc and share teas, light foods and stories of summer intentions.
–Practice yoga outdoors. Ground your feet on the grass or the sand, breath in the open air and connect with the Earth and the season’s energy.
The summer solstice is not only a celebration of light and warmth–but also a reminder to pause and to notice life around you. Realign with what lights us from within.
