Balance at the edge of light

The Fall Equinox is a pause in the turning of the year and a season of gratitude—a moment when light and dark share the sky in equal measure. Ancient Druids called this season Mabon, a time to gather the harvest, share gratitude, and honour the delicate balance of the Earth as it tilts toward winter. That same dance of reciprocity and release is what we invite onto the yoga mat.

On the mat, the equinox is a natural time for grounding sequences and slow, deliberate transitions. I know as I look at my own practice for this season and in creating sequences for the classes I teach, I look toward steady Warrior poses that root through the feet, Tree pose, or gentle twists and slow transitions that help us shed what’s no longer needed, like trees preparing to drop their leaves. Is it possible to find a practice that mirrors the equinox itself, balancing left and right, lunar and solar energies.

For some, the declining daylight can be challenging. Here are some ideas to help weave the traditions of this season (Fall Equinox for some and Mabon for others) to bring perhaps some inner light. Begin your day with a sun salutation or two to greet the dawn . End your day with a simple outdoor ritual such as lighting a candle, name three blessings you’ve harvested this year, or three things you are ready to release.

.

As the air cools and the evening stretch longer (sweata weatha for sure!), step outside and feel the crunch of leaves beneath your feet, notice the balance of dusk and dawn, buy a new type of apple and savour the flavour, or maybe create your own ritual that honours both light and dark.

Heart-felt gratitude for stopping by. Dr. M.
