There’s a quiet part of the body we don’t often greet.
Our feet—tucked into shoes, carrying us faithfully, rarely invited into the conversation—until something aches, tightens, or asks for attention.
Lately, I’ve been inviting mine back.

I was wearing my toe separators the other day (yes, they feel a little strange at times) and had a moment of, wait, why am I wearing these again? Right, to create space between toes. Space for sensation. Space for awareness. We do ask a lot of our feet.
Because here’s the thing—our feet were never meant to live compressed. Research continues to explore how separating your toes may help restore natural alignment, improve circulation, and redistribute pressure across the foot. It is not a quick fix (ask my physiotherapist who got me started on toe separating activities quite a few years ago).
But even more simply… when the toes are allowed to move, the body listens differently.
Balance shifts. Awareness drops downward. Plus, when we take time to notice our feet, we wake up proprioception. We notice how we stand, how we root, how we move through space. Even short periods of barefoot awareness or toe mobility can help strengthen the muscles of the feet and improve balance and gait .
So the next time you are standing around, maybe waiting in line somewhere, take a few minutes and ask yourself:
What does it feel like to spread your toes?
To stand with a wider base?
To let the earth meet you differently?
I hope my reflection allows you to Stand and spread those toes! Not perfectly–just presently.
With Gratitude
Michelle
